The garden Jellicoe laid  out along the river Gade has been restored.  This is the story of its design, execution, decline and renaissance.

Hemel Hempstead was the third post-war New Town designated. Geoffrey Jellicoe was initially commissioned to design the whole of the new town but in the end designed only the town centre garden which was not completed until 1961. Some of his ideas, influences and concepts, as seen in his other works can be seen in Hemel and this talk also looks outside of the water garden to understand why it is as it is.Kate Harwood is Planning and Conservation Officer for Hertfordshire Gardens Trust and has researched these gardens.
