Local Data Spaces - Supporting Local Authority Responses to COVID-19

We are pleased to welcome Dr Mark Green - winner of the Project Award at the 2021 ONS Research Excellence Awards - To provide a virtual presentation on the winning project. Mark is a Senior Lecturer in Health Geography at the University of Liverpool.Mark’s research examines how new forms of (big) data (e.g., text, images, loyalty cards) can supplement government data (e.g., electronic health records, surveys) to understand the social and spatial drivers of health inequalities.

The TalkLocal Data Spaces co-produced research with 25 Local Authorities, Joint Biosecurity Centre (Department of Health and Social Care) and Office for National Statistics (ONS) to examine how secure data sources can be mobilised to inform local responses to the Covid-19 pandemic.The research team helped local authorities use timely data from the ONS’ Secure Research Service, alongside big consumer data from the ESRC’s Consumer Data Research Centre. Where Local Authorities did not have sufficient resources to make the most of these data, the research team co-designed analysis ready data solutions to help Local Authorities benefit from these data.Short reports summarising key data insights were then produced for all Local Authorities in England, helping to improve the reach of insights from the project. The talk will present some of the key insights from the research project, including how the team support local (e.g., mass testing pilot in Liverpool) and national (e.g., reporting to SAGE on gender inequalities) policy issues.There will also be time for you to present your questions to Mark in the last 15 minutes of the talk.
