Dr. Alistair Fair, "Peter Moro and Partners."

This talk will give an overview of the work of Peter Moro and his colleagues in architectural practice. Beginning in the 1930s and ending in the 1980s, Moro and his colleagues worked in locations across England, and especially in London; they tackled a wide range of building types, almost exclusively working for public-sector clients and becoming best-known for a sequence of accomplished theatres. Moro was a firm believer in the need for a Modern architecture, but, learning from his mentor Berthold Lubetkin, he advocated a Modernism which was, on the one hand, rigorous in its response to function and controlled in its geometries, yet which also possessed interest in its spaces, materials, and lighting. The paper will illustrate their approach and will reflect on the ways in which it demonstrated a new approach to what public architecture might be in post-war Britain.Bio: Dr. Alistair Fair is a Reader in Architectural History at the University of Edinburgh, and a specialist in twentieth-century architecture in Britain.
