Print Pals: Then and Now - Publication Launch

Slade School of Fine Art

A lockdown print collaboration between the National College of the Arts (NCA), Lahore & the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL.

In early 2021, at the height of the pandemic, the Printmaking Areas at <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/slade/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL</a>, and the <a href="https://www.nca.edu.pk/Dept-finearts" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">National College of the Arts (NCA), Lahore</a>, invited students from across both schools to apply to take part in a<a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/slade/research/projects/print-pals_then-and-now" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> unique (lockdown) print collaboration</a>. Participating students and staff from both institutions embarked on a series of conversations where new connections about practice, the shared histories between both institutions, and the current situation were made from which new friendships grew. Please join us on Zoom from 2 pm (London)/ 7 pm (Lahore) on Wednesday December 15th 2021 for an online event to officially launch the resulting publication <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/slade/research/projects/print-pals_then-and-now" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Print Pals: Then and Now</a>, which has been printed in both Lahore and London in a limited edition. The book is accompanied by a collection of essays, written by students led by Professor Ming Tiampo at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. The publications will also be distributed online as a PDF. Print Pals: Then and Now emerged as an outcome of the <a href="https://www.paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk/research/london-asia?/about/london-asia" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Paul Mellon Centre’s London, Asia research project</a> and in association with the<a href="https://www.paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk/research/london-asia-art-worlds-conference" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> London, Asia, Art, Worlds symposium</a> Tiampo curated with Hammad Nasar and Sarah Turner at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, London. It has been supported by <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/global/regional-focus/ucl-south-asia" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">UCL Global Engagement, South Asia</a>. From 15th December until 22 June 2022, the Print Pals publication will be on display as part of the <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/slade/slade-150/testing-ground" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Testing Ground exhibition</a> at UCL Art Museum, South Cloisters, UCL, Gower Street, London WC1 6BT (Wed-Fri 1-5pm, entrance free)Image: collaboration between Murtaza Zaidi, linocut print with gouache on tea stained paper, 2021 (left) and Yifan He, video stills, 3:27:08, 2021 (right)
