This online workshop is aimed at researchers who are interested in using and/or creating fictional texts in their work

This online workshop is aimed at researchers who are interested in using and/or creating fictional texts in their work. Participants will explore different ways in which researchers have used fictional texts for data collection, as analytic method and to share findings, particularly focussing on work in the social sciences. We will examine some practical, epistemological and ethical rationales for using these methods and also consider the challenges and pitfalls involved. Participants will have an opportunity to read and critique some examples of sociological fiction from different genres. In addition, the session will include some practical advice on getting started and lots of chances to experiment with writing research-inspired fiction. No prior experience of writing or using fiction in research is required but participants should come prepared to discuss ways in which they might like to use fiction in relation to current or possible future research projects.&quot;About the speakersLeah Gilman is Research Fellow in the Centre for Social Ethics and Policy at The University of Manchester and a member of the Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Lives. Her research spans the sociology of reproduction and personal life, childhood and medical sociology. She has a particular interest in creative methods for sharing research, particularly sociological fiction. Leah’s research has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including Sociology, Sociology of Health and Illness and the International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family, as well as in various creative and/or online formats, such as animated films, recorded webinars and blogs (available here). She also led the Donor Stories project, working with author Becky Tipper, to produce a series of short research-inspired stories. Leah’s new book, Donors: Curious Connections in Donor Conception, co-authored with Petra Nordqvist, is due out in 2022.Becky Tipper writes short fiction and non-fiction. Her stories and essays have appeared online and in print, in publications including FlashBack Fiction, The Honest Ulsterman, The Lampeter Review, Prole, Literary Mama, Seren Books, and For Books’ Sake. Her fiction has won the Bridport Prize and a Tom-Gallon Trust Award from the Society of Authors and has been commissioned by the University of Manchester. Becky is Reviews Editor at online literary magazine The Short Story.
