Alison explores the story of the book Jane Austen Embroidery and the happy accidents that led to her collaboration with Jennie Batchelor.

After 20+ years teaching Biology, Alison left FE in 2013 to pursue her passion for historical embroidery/ costume. She specialises particularly in the embroidery of the Georgian period: her work is both full-size and in miniature. 
As a practicing embroiderer, she explores and teaches traditional embroidery methods, and researches the use of embroidery on costume, particularly in the Georgian period. She also collects embroidery patterns from the late 18th/early 19th centuries. 
In 2020 she released Jane Austen Embroidery with Jennie Batchelor, published in the UK by Pavilion Books and in the USA by Dover Publications. It contains 15 projects based on patterns published in The Lady’s Magazine between 1775 and 1819, together with historical notes and context by Jennie.

Serendipity: Austen, Embroidery and the Lady’s MagazineAlison Larkin explores the story of the book Jane Austen Embroidery, and the happy accidents that led to her collaboration with Prof Jennie Batchelor on this fascinating project. She talks about the links between the Lady’s Magazine, Jane Austen’s needlework and the discovery of the patterns which inspired the book. She tells the story of its publication just before Covid struck, of the further discoveries that they both made, and how they have been developing the ways we can work with this wonderful resource of patterns.
