The Melanie Klein Trust was founded on 1st February 1955 to promote training and research in the psychoanalytic theory and technique adopted and practised by Melanie Klein.  The primary objects of the Melanie Klein Trust are:- To further and promote training and research in psychoanalytic theory and technique as adopted, developed and practised by Melanie Klein and ‘developments thereof’.- To publish, promote and encourage the publication of books, articles, pamphlets, and papers which are based upon or may further the contributions to psychoanalytic theory and technique made by Melanie Klein.- To promote clinical work in psychoanalysis based upon the theory and and technique of Melanie Klein.- Generally to secure the furtherance and development of theory and technique of psychoanalysis adopted, developed and practised by Melanie Klein.- To do all this in any part of the world.

Conversations About Authors: David Bell and Emma Staples Hotopf on Hanna Segal

This event on psychotic anxieties will explore Hanna Segal’s influential contribution to the understanding of severe disturbances of mental functioning and psychotic processes. There will be a discussion of two of Hanna Segal’s papers (see below), linking the ideas they contain with contemporary clinical practice in psychoanalysis and psychiatry. Alongside her seminal clinical paper on the delusional system, Hanna Segal’s investigation of William Golding’s book The Spire also addresses the omnipotent delusional state of mind. The conversation will focus on the way in which a delusional system can function as a defence against a catastrophic internal situation, with its origins in early trauma. David Bell is a training and supervising analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society. An authority on Hanna Segal’s work, he edited Reason and Passion: A Celebration of the Work of Hanna Segal. He has worked extensively with patients with severe disturbance.Emma Staples Hotopf is a fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and consultant psychiatrist in psychotherapy.
