A discussion of approaches to evaluation for participatory arts projects that include creative risk-taking in their design

This seminar is presented in association with the <a href="https://www.gsmd.ac.uk/about_the_school/research/institute_for_social_impact_research_in_the_performing_arts/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Institute for Social Impact Research in the Performing Arts</a>.This talk, by <a href="https://www.gsmd.ac.uk/about_the_school/research/research_staff/department/37-research-and-knowledge-exchange-staff/1885-dr-maia-mackney/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Maia Mackney</a> and <a href="https://www.gsmd.ac.uk/about_the_school/research/research_staff/department/37-research-and-knowledge-exchange-staff/1884-dr-toby-young/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Toby Young</a> (Guildhall School) will discuss approaches to evaluation for participatory arts that includes creative risk-taking in their design, and considers some of the leaps of knowledge and discovery that can ensue when these approaches are embraced and encouraged. By examining the methods used to research the London-based participatory project Unleashed (Barbican Centre, 2012), it will consider how a creative, durational approach to research and evaluation methods might support the leaps in knowledge that result from moments of “failure” or “decomposition”, and in turn, paint a clearer and more detailed picture of the modes of disruption that sit at the heart of the practice. Finally, the talk will reflect on the narrative of social inclusion set forth by recent UK governments and cultural policy agendas in which critical reflection is often challenging.What is ResearchWorks?The Guildhall School’s ResearchWorks is a programme of events centred around the School’s research activity, bringing together staff, students and guests of international standing.
