<h2>Join us on Tuesday 22nd Feb at 7:30 pm for our Zoom meeting featuring the well known journalist Polly Toynbee as our  guest speaker.</h2><h2><em>(This is a re-scheduled event; 22nd Feb is new date. Apologies for any inconvenience.)</em></h2><h3>Andrew Marr has said that &quot;what makes Polly stand out as a journalist is not only her strong views but also her ferocious appetite for research.  In a media world in which too many media columnists simply voice their top-of-the-head opinions, Polly always arrives heavily armed with hard facts&quot;.  </h3><h3>What better enticement can we offer for you to join us for Polly&#x27;s talk on Austerity and Brexit, based on her book,(written with David Walker) &quot;The Lost Decade&quot; ?  </h3><p>&quot;A decade of austerity and paralysis nurtured contempt for leaders, institutions and fellow citizens and fertilised the ground for a rebellious Brexit.  This is the anatomy of a dark decade, bringing hope for better to come.&quot;</p><p>&quot;From depleted Whitehall&#x27;s frantic scramble to hire thousands more experts to cope with Brexit, to the critical shortage of nurses and carers, cuts in environmental health officers and fewer health and safety at work inspections, voters now see a threadbare public sector.&quot;</p><p>&quot;History shows – and this was proved in the Blair years – that when the NHS reaches roughly EU funding levels, its results soar.  When funding falls too far, trolleys pile up in corridors.&quot;</p><p>&quot;The right’s “freedoms” of post-Brexit deregulation would have publicly unacceptable consequences.  Do they mean dirty food, Dickensian labour and unsafe buildings, unchecked by ridiculed environmental health officers?&quot;</p><p>&quot;The Tories seem unhinged by Brexit’s balloon bursting, with the UK losing £12bn of trade in October 2021 alone and the Office for Budget Responsibility estimating Brexit will cause a 4% drop in GDP.&quot;</p><p>&quot;David Frost was a useful emblem for the party whose fact-denying Brexit disease now infects every other policy. &quot;</p><p>Polly Toynbee has worked for the BBC, The Independent and the Guardian.</p><p>The University of Kent awarded Toynbee the honorary title of Doctor of Civil Law in November 2007 in recognition of her concern with poverty and welfare. </p><p>She won the Orwell Prize for journalism in 1998 (for journalism published by The Independent), and in 2007 was named &#x27;Columnist of the Year&#x27; at the British Press Awards.</p><p>Toynbee declined to be made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2000.</p><p><strong>Send your questions for Polly Toynbee, in advance to:</strong></p><h3>info@nes4eu.co.uk </h3><h3> and join us on Tuesday 22nd February to learn more.</h3><p>The Zoom meeting will open with the Introduction from 19.15, but the talk is due to start at 19.30.
