The Harty Room

This special event, deferred from his anniversary season, celebrates Beethoven as a composer of large-scale, heroic sonatas – with a special chance to hear the grandiose Sonata in A op.69 for cello and piano. Celebrated cellist Kate Gould, a founder member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, is partnered by her London Bridge Piano Trio colleague Daniel Tong, in op.69 and the very compressed late Sonata op.102 no 1 - a rare opportunity to hear these most intense and intimate Sonatas of Beethoven.

Kate Gould gained an entrance scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in 1990 and went on to study in Berlin at the Hochschule der Künste. During this time she was selected for the BBC 'Young Artists Forum' and Tillett Trust scheme and became a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra. She has devoted most of her career to chamber music, primarily as a member of the London Bridge Trio and, formerly, the Leopold String Trio. As a BBC New Generations Artist and ECHO Rising Star, she was awarded many accolades for her performances and Hyperion recordings including the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Chamber Music and a Borletti‐Buitoni Trust Award. The London Bridge Trio have been receiving rave reviews for the first two discs in their ongoing recording project, 'The Leipzig Circle’: the complete trios of Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn and Clara and Robert Schumann.Kate is artistic director of the Winchester Chamber Music Festival and Ironstone Chamber Music Festival and is often invited to other festivals worldwide. In 2019 she performed Beethoven Cello Sonatas at the Castle Hotel, Taunton, for Martin Randall with Martin Roscoe) and in 2021 she performed at the Penarth and the North York Moors chamber music festivals. In May 2022 she will perform Isabel Mundry’s ‘Le Corps des Cordes’ at the Wurzburg Mozartfest and will be resident cellist at John Whibley’s ‘Musical House Party’ at St George's Hotel, Llandudno.Kate is a long‐standing member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and regularly plays as guest‐principal cellist of the English Chamber Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, BBC Philharmonic and Royal Philharmonic orchestras, as well as the 'Orchestre Revolutionaire et Romantique' and 'Les Siecles’ using gut strings and period performance styles.<a href="https://www.kategouldcello.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.kategouldcello.com/</a>

Daniel Tong was born in Cornwall and studied in London. His musical life is spent performing as soloist and chamber musician, writing and teaching. Outside the UK he has recently performed in France, Belgium and Portugal. In 2012 he recorded his first solo CD of works by Schubert for Quartz, Gramophone magazine describing him as “an extraordinarily sympathetic Schubertian.” He has recently recorded his first disc of Beethoven Piano Sonatas for Resonus Classics, due for release in Spring 2022, and will record Brahms piano works later in 2022 for the same label. Solo appearances this season include St Georges Bristol, Dundee Chamber Music Society and Hatchlands Park in Surrey.His London Bridge Trio has established itself as an exciting presence on the UK music scene. They have performed at the Wigmore Hall and Kings Place in London, Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, undertaken a four-concert residency at St John's Smith Square and broadcast numerous times on BBC Radio. Their second Frank Bridge release for Dutton was shorttlisted for the Gramophone Chamber Music Award. In 2009 they established their own festival in Winchester, directed by the trio’s cellist, Kate Gould. They are currently recording works by Robert and Clara Schumann, Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn for SOMM Recordings, the first two discs of which were released to glowing reviewsPraised by The Guardian for his ‘masterly pianism', Daniel has collaborated with the Elias, Navarra, Heath, Callino, Dante, Carducci and Sacconi quartets as well as singers Raphaela Papadakis, Mary Bevan, Stephan Loges, James Gilchrist and Paul Agnew. He has a regular duo with baritone Ivan Ludlow. Other recent CD releases have included the Brahms and Beethoven cello sonatas (on period instruments) with Robin Michael for Resonus Classics and works by Schubert, David Matthews and Fauré with violinist Sara Trickey for Deux-Elles (described by Gramophone as ‘definitive’). Each year Daniel plays with an array of wonderful individual artists, often at his own chamber festival: founded in 1999, the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival attracts many exciting chamber musicians to spend ten days making music in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The Festival has become a well-established and treasured event in the region’s cultural life, also gaining national attention for its creative spirit and artistic vibrancy.Daniel’s Beethoven Plus project has been a vibrant addition to his life over recent years. Alongside Krysia Osostowicz, he commissioned ten new works to partner the Beethoven Sonatas for Piano and Violin, premiering all during 2015. The duo has since given the entire cycle in Bristol, Oxford, Cambridge, Sheffield, Aberdeen and Wells, where they recently recorded all twenty works for SOMM Recordings. With Music Discovery Live, Daniel works alongside musicologist and broadcaster Richard Wigmore, presenting insights into masterpieces of the solo piano and chamber music repertoire. For many years he has enjoyed exploring the piano duo repertoire with his brother Joseph, and they have performed several times for Music Discovery Live, at venues around the UK, and on BBC Radio 3.Daniel is Head of Piano in Chamber Music at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and chamber music coach at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music.
