Government Procurement: Taking Advantage of New Contractual Opportunities within the FTA

The Chamber is delighted to partner with the Department of International Trade (DIT) for a second webinar discussing another facet of the new Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement: government procurement.More specifically, our expert speakers will discuss the purpose of FTA procurement chapters and how these benefit businesses. The session will also incorporate the wider global perspective, detailing how WTO procurement obligations that previously existed between the UK and Australia have evolved with the new FTA.The session will also detail upcoming procurement opportunities in both Australia and the UK and what businesses should do if they face a barrier to participating in government procurement that they believe to be covered by the agreement.We look forward to you joining the discussion and engaging in the live Q &amp; A during the webinar, where our experts will be happy to answer any questions, you may have.This session will be run by Juliana Reed and Alan McGuiness:Juliana Reed, Lead Government Procurement Trade Negotiator, Departement for International TradeJuliana has acted as lead Government Procurement negotiator in the UK-Australia and UK-Japan FTAs. Prior to negotiating procurement FTA chapters, Juliana supported the UK’s accession to the WTO Agreement on Government Procurement – ensuring UK businesses maintained legally guaranteed access to £1.3 trillion worth of procurement opportunities post-EU Exit. In addition, Juliana has worked on a number of other issues across government, including EU Exit strategy and small business strategy.Alan McGuiness, Assistant Director - Goods and Government Procurement, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and TradeAlan was the lead Government Procurement negotiator for the Australia-UK FTA and is leading GP negotiations with a range of other partners, including the EU and India. Alan is also Australia’s current representative to the WTO Agreement on Government Procurement and its Committee.Prior to this, Alan took a lead role in the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources’ international engagement on technical barriers to trade and standards and conformance issues, including under APEC, the CPTPP and the WTO. He also helped further Australia’s industry, science and resources interests while at Australia’s Embassy in Beijing, China.
