We are very pleased to welcome attendees to the second colloquium in our series on Philosophy and the Mental Health Act.In this event, Professor Lisa Bortolotti from University of Birmingham and Clara Bergen from City University of London School of Health Sciences will be speaking on the topic of &#x27;Communication in youth mental health clinical encounters: Introducing the agential stance&#x27;. This will be a hybrid event, with an option to either attend in person in Bush House or online via Zoom. We have not yet been told about any possible capacity restrictions, but in case we are only allowed a certain number of people, we will choose them on a first-come first-serve basis. Abstract: &quot;When young people seek support from mental healthcare practitioners, the encounters may affect the young people’s sense of self, and in particular undermine their sense of agency. In our study, we analysed video-recorded encounters between young people and mental healthcare practitioners in emergency services. We identified a certain stance that practitioners can adopt (what we call the agential stance) in order to avoid undermining young people’s sense of agency in the mental health clinical encounter. Such stance is comprised of five practices that are reflected in the communication between practitioners and young people: (1) validating the young person’s experiences; (2) legitimising the young person’s choice to seek help; (3) refraining from objectifying the young person; (4) affirming the young person’s capacity to contribute to positive change; (5) involving the young person in the decision-making process. In this paper, we make a case for the benefits of the agential stance without neglecting its potential risks. We propose that an examination of good and bad practice in clinical encounters with respect to safeguarding young people’s sense of agency should inform the training of mental healthcare practitioners.&quot;This event is the second one in our series on Philosophy and the Mental Health Act.
