Anchor institutions & Good Work: A Collaborative Learning Workshop

Mo Sadiq

The NE&Y Anchors Network hosts a workshop exploring practical levers for tackling inequalities by enabling local people to secure good jobs.

An anchor institution is any organisation that plays a pivotal role in communities. These connections mean that anchor institutions are in a prime position to address the social, or wider, determinants of health - the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. Anchor institutions do this through how they employ people, purchase goods and services, use buildings and spaces, have impact on the environment, and engage in partnership with local communities .The Covid-19 global pandemic has brought the issue of health inequality into focus in this country, creating significant health and economic impacts which we will face for many months, if not years, to come. And as with other health and wellbeing outcomes, the impacts from Covid-19 have not been experienced equally. Many anchor institutions have been central to the immediate response to this pandemic, and through their role as anchor institutions they also have an essential role in recovery and achieving the aim of building back fairer.Aims and objectives:This development session will explore how anchor organisations can recruit in ways that provide equality of opportunity and maximise scope for local people to secure good jobs. It will take a collaborative and learning-focussed approach to showcase examples of good practice, identify the barriers for particular individuals and community groups and the practical support needed by anchor organisations and systems in order to shape future actions and resources. Speakers will include: Chair: Ruth Speare, Consultant Public Health, SY Mayoral Combined AuthorityKeynote speaker: Rob Webster, CEO-Designate, West Yorkshire Integrated Care SystemCase studies:

Nicholas Werran, Partnerships Director, Breaking Barriers Innovations, The West Yorkshire Playbook

Keri Evans, Senior Manager, Employment & Skills Service, Leeds City Council & Michelle Stanley, People Development Manager, Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, Leeds Health & Care Careers: Narrowing Inequalities

Rachael Harrison, People’s Champion, This is what ‘good work’ means to me

Audience:This event is aimed at those working across the North East, Yorkshire and Humber who are undertaking work on anchor institution priorities and want to learn more, as well as those who are just starting out on their anchor journey.
