An introduction to biological recording platform iRecord and the world of butterfly and moth recording

Butterfly Conservation&#x27;s Supporting Science project has received DCMS and National Lottery funding, distributed by the Heritage Fund as part of their Digital Skills for Heritage initiative. We are offering 120 free places to our partners and particularly encourage people from diverse ethnic and cultural communities, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, young people and people from socio-economic backgrounds under served by our sector.<h3>Discovering iRecord: Butterflies &amp; Moths</h3>Location: FSC VirtualDuration: 4 weeksDate Fri 29, April 2022 - Mon 06, June 2022Tutor: Keiron BrownDelivered by Butterfly Conservation in partnership with the Field Studies Council ‘Discovering iRecord: Butterflies and Moths’ will introduce you to the basics of biological recording, such as grid references, data flow and verification using moth or butterfly sightings you have recorded.The course is perfect for people new to iRecord, or those in need of a refresher to hone existing iRecord skills.<ul><li>4-week online course for adults, with a weekly time commitment of 3-5 hours.</li><li>Access to study content, activities and tutor-graded assignments through the FSC virtual learning platform.</li><li>Access to weekly live virtual classroom sessions at the end of each week with the course tutor through Zoom (recorded for those that are unable to attend the live sessions).</li><li>E-certificate upon course completion.</li><li>This course will involve completing field assignments so learners will benefit from access to a garden or local park.</li></ul>This course is aimed at adults only and course attendees must be at least 18 years old in order to attend.<h3>Course outline</h3>Many course activities will focus on butterfly and moth data, but skills gained will enable the use of iRecord for the recording of multiple taxa.REC101 Introduction to Biological Recording covers what a biological record is and introduces concepts such as data resolution, data quality and verification and how these concepts apply to butterfly and moth records. The iRecord platform is introduced and learners are set up with accounts and access to the Discovering iRecord activity for future assignments.REC102 Grid References &amp; Submitting Records introduces the technical skills needed to submit records, including grid references and practical experience of submitting real biological records through iRecord,working with butterfly and moth activities.REC103 Data-Flow &amp; iRecord Activities covers what happens to a butterfly or moth record between the initial observation and use of the record by user groups such as conservationists, scientists and decision-makers. Including introductions to the Butterfly Conservation national schemes and examples of data use. Assignments teach learners how to use different recording forms and look up individual species records on the iRecord system.REC104 Exploring &amp; Downloading Data looks at how data can be accessed in iRecord, focusing on butterflies and moths and where to go outside of iRecord to access national and even international datasets.
