The next speaker in our colloquia series is Dr Simon Pope, Lecturer in Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering at University of Sheffield. Dr Pope is co-lead of Active Metamaterials Special Interest Group, within UK Metamaterials Network. The colloquium is titled 'Metamaterials as Systems'.Metamaterials are generally considered as materials that attain their novel properties predominantly from their physical structure. However, in many cases, their description as a “material” is not that accurate. A better description and understanding of metamaterials can potentially be attained by considering them as a “system” from the outset. This becomes even more apparent when we start to consider designs such as active or programmable metamaterials, particularly when they require the inclusion of components to achieve sensing and actuation. This has resulted in a highly multidisciplinary research subject with a growing emphasis on applications. In this talk Dr Pope will highlight the systems nature of some aspects of metamaterials. He will discuss how we can consider metamaterials as systems and how in some cases, this can have the potential for improved design and performance. The talk will take place on Friday 25th March, 12.30-13.30pm as a hybrid event. The in-person venue is Living Systems Institute Seminar Room A, Streatham Campus, University of Exeter; virtual attendees can join via Zoom (link will be sent in registration email).
