Artists, Alison Carpenter-Hughes and this week’s guest co-host Sophie Standing, return with a new exciting line-up of guests in season two of &#x27;A Love Note to Textiles,&#x27; hosting a series of free online live interviews featuring international textile artists in front of a virtual audience. In the fourth and final episode of season two, we look at the fascinating process and work of Matthew Downham:At times I worry I’m not smart enough, not cultured enough and often recognize that I don’t understand myself, that my thoughts are often elusive and vague and so I use the work to help give expression to this, especially to the thought, ‘I’m not sure what I’m doing, but I get the sense it’s worthwhile.’ The work began by using sewing as a way to alleviate the need to create. I soon realized that I was enthralled by the act of creating a stitch and that the process surpassed any visual outcomes. By trying to find a reason behind this I struggled to create work and was distracted by trying to find meaning. This is where I began to realise the elusive quality that thoughts can have and began to accept the fact that I won’t always be able to make sense of my intuitions and musings, and that we are not transparent to ourselves.I began to develop a creative process that has allowed me to keep working.
