Field Day led by Ross Cook buildings archaeologist

This Field Day will be led by Ross Cook. Ross is a buildings archaeologist and dendrochonologist. His work takes him all over the country to record, interpret and date buildings of all types, from cottage to castle, and chapel to cathedral. Ross is the Cathedral Archaeologist to St Davids in Pembrokeshire and Consultant Archaeologist to Christchurch Priory, Dorset.We meet at Llandewi Ystradenni and will begin our day by visiting Llandewi Hall which is a prestigious Elizabethan Manor House – that retains many original internal features. We will then drive to nearby Coed Trewernau Mill, for refreshments and our packed lunch. Whilst Coed Trewernau Mill is not a featured building on this day – Ross will never the less take the opportunity to point out various stages in the evolution of the mill and mill cottage.We will then drive to Carneddau farmstead near Hundred House to examine a very rare survival of a yeoman’s farmstead with 16th Century origins. Not altered for over a hundred years, this group of buildings gives us insights into the evolution of typical Radnorshire farmsteads since the end of the medieval period – most of which are now lost. This location is only accessible by 4 wheel drive or on foot, so vehicles will have to be left around 1 mile from the farmstead and lifts will be offered to those who need assistance.It is our hope that, as a result of the training, you will begin to understand the evolution of vernacular buildings within our landscape and that you will be inspired to stay in touch with us and join our group of community heritage volunteers – and contribute observations to understanding our heritage when visiting our Abbey or the granges that it owned. We are collating our findings and hosting discussions on-line, through our website and Zoom discussions, so that we can all learn more about the fascinating history and prehistory of our countryside.Attendees will receive an information pack prior to the event. Please note that young people (under-18s) and vulnerable adults will need to be accompanied. You will need to provide your own transport. To drive between locations.
