This Landscape Archaeology Field School’s aim is to introduce the participants to the landscape archaeology of mid-Wales, by examining in detail an area of the Cwmhir Abbey’s Home Grange.
Day 1 will be indoors at Pant-y-dwr Community Centre. Jemma will take us through desk based approaches to understanding the activities of our forebears, with a particular emphasis upon the area of Red Lion and Castle Bank near St David’s Well. We will be looking at old maps, online data sources, old photographs, archaeological finds and historical records in a relaxed, workshop environment.
Day 2 will be in the field when we will visit the areas that we have been studying on Day 1. This is an area rich in prehistoric and medieval archaeological features. Will we be able to spot them all - and will we make some new discoveries?? You might (not compulsory) like to bring a camera, binoculars, and a notebook.

It is our hope that, as a result of the training, you will be able to interpret the humps and bumps in our landscape more fully and that you will be inspired to stay in touch with us/join our group of community heritage volunteers – and feedback any observations that you make that relate to our heritage when visiting our Abbey and the granges that it owned. It is our intention to collate these new findings and host discussions on-line, through our website and Zoom discussions, so that we can all learn more about the fascinating history of our countryside.
Attendees will receive an information pack prior to the event. Tea and coffee will be provided but individuals should bring packed lunches for each day. The field day will include a walk of about 2 miles and a moderate hill climb and will involve walking on steep and uneven ground. Please note that young people (under-18s) and vulnerable adults will need to be accompanied.
