To quote that song, these ‘sisters are doing it for themselves’ – making music to make your heart sing and your toes tap with the joy of the groove. Their mission statement puts it perfectly: ‘Expect an evening of melodic jazz, latin grooves and a sparkling performance from these four renowned musicians. Swing, bossa nova, Afro Cuban grooves and a sense of fun.’ River Cruz? Influenced by Penelope Cruz? Celia Cruz? Those cruise adverts by Joanna Lumley? These leading lights in British jazz could never resist a good pun title! Remember them in The Guest Stars, the Lydia D&#x27;Ustebyn Ladies Swing Orchestra and now Electric Landladies? Celebrated guitarist Deidre Cartwright, composer and bandleader Alison Rayner, saxophonist Diane McLoughlin and percussionist Jessica Palin have all pioneered changes in the way women are regarded in jazz, all band leaders in their own right, gathering multiple ‘award winning’ soubriquets and grooving their way into the front row of the London jazz scene with the longstanding Blow The Fuse project.
