Guided Tour of St Ann's Allotments

St Ann’s Allotments are the oldest and largest area of Victorian detached town gardens in the world, and are Grade 2* Listed by English Heritage. The site covers 75 acres, has 700 gardens, over 30 miles of hedgerow and 2000 fruit trees, many of which are heritage varieties.STAA deliver outreach programmes to allow all members of the community to benefit from the site, including children’s activities on the Community Orchard, and volunteering opportunities on Urban Nature, Nursery, and Heritage Display gardens.

The guided walk begins at the Visitor&#x27;s Centre and takes you on a 90-minute tour around the site, stopping at features of importance and interest during its 700-year history. We&#x27;ll share the story of how the allotments started, their use as Victorian pleasure gardens, and how the site is used today.St Ann’s Allotments are Grade 2* Listed by Historic England, and designated an Area of Importance for Nature Conservation. The tour includes a visit to two plots - the Heritage Display Garden and The Nursery.

<h3>Tour details</h3>Booking: Maximum capacity for each tour is 15 people.Refreshments: Please bring your own food and drink, and take rubbish home with you. We&#x27;ll stop at the Heritage Display Garden to rest and explore, so feel free to bring a flask of tea or coffee with you. If it will be a hot day, please bring a bottle of water.Amenities: Two compost toilets are available for use at the middle and end of the tour, with hand sanitiser for hand washing.Terrain and weather: The walk is 1.3 miles, with hills and uneven surfaces, so please wear suitable shoes and dress for the weather. If it has been raining, some paths may be slippy or muddy, and in Summer there may be nettles or brambles beside the path.Parking and directions: There is free on-street parking along Ransom Road. The entrance is opposite house number 80 Ransom Road, NG3 3LJ.Attendance: If you can no longer attend, please cancel your ticket or email us at info@staa-allotments.org.uk so that we can offer your ticket to someone else.

<h3>The Heritage Display Garden</h3>The tour includes a visit to our Heritage Display Garden. This unique plot showcases the use of allotments through three different periods in history.The Heritage Display Garden is maintained by volunteers at STAA for educational purposes. It features a variety of mature fruit trees, many of them heritage varieties, and also includes a pond, a glasshouse, and a Victorian summer house.
