Curating in a Crisis: Covid-19 and the National Gallery

Join curator Christine Riding who will speak on the impact of the pandemic on curation in the National Gallery.

Chester Visual Arts are pleased to announce the launch of their annual Lecture Series Talks. This years’ series is hosted by Dr Cathy Pütz and titled Radical Times, Radical Change. For the final lecture in the series, Christine Riding, the Jacob Rothschild Head of the Curatorial Department and Curator of British Paintings at the National Gallery, considers the impact of the pandemic on curating at the National Gallery at the <a href="https://www1.chester.ac.uk/sites/default/files/SITE%20MAP_Chester_A1%202018-19.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Beswick (Sutton) Building</a>. Refreshments will be available on the night.About Christine RidingChristine Riding is the Jacob Rothschild Head of the Curatorial Department and Curator of British Paintings at the National Gallery. Before joining the National Gallery, Christine held curatorial positions, first at the Museum of London and the Palace of Westminster and then, from 1999 to 2011, at the Tate. She was Curator of Eighteenth-and-Nineteenth-century British Art at Tate Britain, co-curating a number of exhibitions including ‘William Blake’ (2000), ‘A Picture of Britain’ (2005), ‘Hogarth’ (2007) and ‘Lure of the East: British Orientalist Painting’ (2008), and ‘Gauguin: Maker of Myth’ (2010) at Tate Modern. From 2011-18 she was Head of Arts and Curator of the Queen’s House at the Royal Museums Greenwich, where she curated the ‘Turner and the Sea’ exhibition (2013) and led on the acquisition of the ‘Kangaroo’ and ‘Dingo’ by George Stubbs (2013) and the ‘Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I’ (2016). She was also the curatorial lead on the major refurbishment of the Queen’s House, Greenwich, which included commissioning the installation in the Great Hall by Turner prize winning artist Richard Wright. At the National Gallery, she has curated the exhibitions, ‘Kehinde Wiley: Prelude’ (December 2021-April 2022) and ‘Gainsborough’s Blue Boy: The Return of a British Icon’ (January-May 2022).Chester Visual ArtsChester Visual Arts provides high-quality exhibitions and educational initiatives in Chester and wider Cheshire.
