PAMIS, as part of their 30th anniversary, is hosting a webinar in April.

PAMIS will be part of an online conversation with Professor Mark Solms, and Dr Nicola Grove exploring questions and implications of the theories discussed in Mark’s latest book The Hidden Spring: A Journey to the Source of Consciousness.This is the first neuroscientific text to put children with profound intellectual/learning disability at the heart of its enquiry into the nature of consciousness. Mark is described in one review as "one of the boldest thinkers in neuroscience". He holds the Chair of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital (Departments of Psychology and Neurology) and is the President of the South African Psychoanalytical Association. He is also Research Chair of the International Psychoanalytical Association (since 2013). He suggests that the seat of consciousness lies not in the cortex, higher levels of thinking and reflection, but in the brainstem, with basic emotions. By restoring feelings to the centre of what it means to be human, we are led to re-evaluate the way we think about identity, selfhood and learning. This provides exciting opportunities for exploring the implications for how we live and work with individuals who have profound learning and multiple disabilities (PMLD).Nicola Grove, trained as a teacher and then as a speech and language therapist with over 40 years’ experience in the field of learning disability. She has specialist experience in the field of narrative development and intervention with children and adults with PMLD. She will lead the conversation with Mark and draw audience questions and participation.A unique opportunity for families of people with PMLD, those providing services and support, national policy makers, academics and all who have an interest in this group of people to come together to discuss the implications of Mark’s profound exploration.
