AboutHOXTON 253 is a London based non-profit artist run gallery and project space, providing an experimental platform to emerging and mid-career artists.Our aim is to nurture creative talents and to build a community of artists and local residents with the objective to provoke critical dialogue within contemporary culture and society.As a green and sustainability-conscious initiative, our passion lies in creating environments that question our communal and individual responsibilities in regards to our societal and political position in the world, while also dedicating particular attention to highlighting artistic voices that challenge the current untenable system and promote a healthier and sustainable future.Acting as a cultural bridge in the heart of Hoxton, we invite local, national and international creatives to participate in our diverse ongoing program, including exhibitions, experimental and educational projects, residencies, workshops, events and screenings. The space, founded in 2019, has already proven to be a valuable platform to artists including those with non-commercial focus, producing over 50 exhibitions, events, and projects.​Our doors are open to all art lovers, artists, the local community, as well as patrons and collectors.

Join us for a life drawing session exploring the themes of our current show WE ARE MADE OF STAR STUFF

Join Hackney-based artist and qualified teacher Kelly Sweeney for an informal life drawing session that will explore the themes of our current show WE ARE MADE OF STAR STUFF whilst celebrating World Pigment Day. Expect a lively dynamic exploratory drawing session that will welcome all abilities on a two-dimensional journey into the pigmented world of materials and processes. This is an inclusive experience for everyone to access drawing as a way of discovery and experimentation in response to a live life model surrounded by artwork in the gallery. With a wealth of experience delivering art education and creative engagement, you will be joining an event where structured support will be on offer, with artistic freedom encouraged. Whether you consider yourself a beginner or pro m fessional, we would love you to join us for an evening of informal creativity that journeys around the themes of the show.Materials will be provided, but you are of course welcome to bring your favourite sketchbook or drawing materials along. Come by yourself, bring friends or make new ones in amongst the exhibition.Who is this workshop for:This workshop is free to access for Hackney Residents as part of the Hello Again, Hackney offer.Tickets for non Hackney residents are £15When: Tuesday 22nd March 2022 / ​7-9pm About the facilitator: Kelly Sweeney is a London-based multidisciplinary artist who studied at Nottingham Trent University and Chelsea School of Art graduating with an MA in 2014. Sweeney exhibits regularly, with work in private collections in Europe, Asia, America, Canada and the UK. Recent exhibitions include; Absent Authors at APT Gallery, London (2021), Ineffable sound and visual collaborative project with LUVA Gallery, London (2021), Night Comers at The Function Suite (2021), Witches, Scamps and Things at HOXTON 253 (2020) and Colour Me film screening premiere at The Horse Hospital, London (2020). Sweeney has been awarded DYCP and National Lottery funding by Arts Council England and is currently working on a collaborative project supported by Jerwood Arts. The artist lives and works in Hackney.

Held by rocks, minerals, ice and the crust of the ground we walk on – our busy surface world percolates the evidence of slow ‘deep time’ processes that have the power to pull us in and reconnect us with the vanished worlds that came before our own, and with those yet to come. Measured in millions of years, this timescale reveals Earth as a monument of destruction and disruption where boundaries between the concepts of the past, present and future blur. Geology is a long-term commitment. It is a way of seeing the world across multiple timescales whilst holding it simultaneously in the mind’s eye. By proposing we re-think our relation to temporality, the exhibition positions deep time as a vantage point which is no longer bound to the dominating constructs of capitalist time, the brief time we live, or even to the extended time of our species. A geological worldview restores attention to the way in which human and non-human agencies are all wrapped together, and points towards a more plurally determined existence.​The exhibition and associated programme are supported by and part of Hello Again, Hackney, the borough's cultural reopening initiative.
