Tools - Nina Bilbey and Simon Smith

The Art Workers’ Guild is a body of more than 400 artists, craftspeople and architects working at the highest levels of excellence in their professions. Founded in 1884 by young architects and designers, its principle of ‘learning by doing’ has spread through arts education and has had a worldwide influence. A respect for quality, for craftsmanship, for the work of the hand, and a recognition of the healing, humane value of craftsmanship still characterises the Guild.

Nina Bilbey , Senior Tutor at City and Guilds of London Art School, and Simon Smith MRSS, Vice President of the Master Carvers Association, talk tools, techniques and tittle tattle.Nina Bilbey is an architectual sculptor. She is a Fine Art Sculpture graduate of Central St Martins School of Art, London, and studied teaching at Leeds University; teaching Art and Ceramics to children and adults for ten years. She holds an advanced qualification in stone masonry, having become an NVQ Assessor after working and teaching in the industry for many years.Simon Smith is an artist who designs, models and carves for commissions. His work ranges from historic ornament and figurative carving to contemporary sculpture and memorials. Recent clients include Liverpool City Council, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, The National Trust and Westminster Abbey, as well as private clients. In 2015 his Winchester memorial to soldiers of the First World War, ’A Promise Honoured’, was shortlisted for the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture.Simon is a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and the Master Carvers Association.
