The Art Workers’ Guild is a body of more than 400 artists, craftspeople and architects working at the highest levels of excellence in their professions. Founded in 1884 by young architects and designers, its principle of ‘learning by doing’ has spread through arts education and has had a worldwide influence. A respect for quality, for craftsmanship, for the work of the hand, and a recognition of the healing, humane value of craftsmanship still characterises the Guild.

Quick sketches or scribbled notes can be the first spark of a new idea or project. Two illustrators discuss how they follow these creative threads and reveal how they make their way from small beginnings to finished pieces.Hannah studied Visual Communication at Glasgow School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art, and has worked for the Drawing Center in New York, the Campaign for Drawing and the House of Illustration in London. Alongside her practice as a painter and illustrator, she co-leads ReachOutRCA, the Royal College of Art’s schools outreach programme.Ruth Martin is an illustrator, printmaker and book artist. Whether printing, drawing, or painting, Ruth’s work is full of wit and whimsy. She produces limited edition books and publishes a range of hand-finished greetings cards and paper games &amp; curios. Alongside this Ruth takes on freelance illustration commissions. Ruth’s work has been exhibited and sold in galleries and shops throughout the UK and abroad. Her work is also held in the collection of Tate Britain.
