The Art Workers’ Guild is a body of more than 400 artists, craftspeople and architects working at the highest levels of excellence in their professions. Founded in 1884 by young architects and designers, its principle of ‘learning by doing’ has spread through arts education and has had a worldwide influence. A respect for quality, for craftsmanship, for the work of the hand, and a recognition of the healing, humane value of craftsmanship still characterises the Guild.

Bridget Harvey and Maiko Tsutsumi discuss the nature of their on-going collaboration. The conversation explores their respective cultural backgrounds that nurtured what they call &#x27;makerly ways&#x27; - common threads forming the basis of their work, placing making in societal contexts.Bridget Harvey uses making to ask critical questions, generating new understanding and adding meaning through craft. Investigating processes and concepts through making: she asks what we make, how we make it, and why that matters. Since 2013 she has focused on repair within multiple disciplines, and as independent practice.Maiko Tsutsumi explores Thingness; the materiality of things, a place where human and material agencies meet across time and space. She studied and apprenticed in furniture making and Japanese lacquer work in Kyoto in the 1990s before moving to London to study furniture design at the Royal College of Art. She later completed a practice based PhD The Poetics of Everyday Objects at Kingston University while working in the furniture and product design industry. In 2008, she took on the course leader role for MA Designer Maker at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, which she ran until 2020. The underlining principle of her practice - making, research, curating, teaching and faciliating - is of the craftsmanship that she began cultivating during her training in woodwork and Japanese lacquer work in Kyoto, Japan.
