The Art Workers’ Guild is a body of more than 400 artists, craftspeople and architects working at the highest levels of excellence in their professions. Founded in 1884 by young architects and designers, its principle of ‘learning by doing’ has spread through arts education and has had a worldwide influence. A respect for quality, for craftsmanship, for the work of the hand, and a recognition of the healing, humane value of craftsmanship still characterises the Guild.

Ceramic sculptor Tessa Eastman and saltglaze potter Jeremy Nichols present and discuss their work. Although the objects they make are very different in nature, the principles and values that guide their practice are remarkably similar, and these similarities and differences will form the basis of their conversation.Tessa Eastman is an award-winning British ceramic artist with over twenty years’ experience of working with clay. Her meticulously hand-built sculptures appear curiously alive with movement. While creating she looks for differences such as soft and hard, order and chaos, geometry and irregularity. Tessa says: ’I aim to fix ungraspable states such as fleeting cloud formations, which represent the ideal and the perishable, doom and fantasy’. She draws inspiration from natural phenomena as seen through a microscope, exploring the strangeness of growth where systems flow and digress.Jeremy Nichols makes domestic pots and specialises in teapots and other drinking and pouring vessels, with a focus on forms that feature open handles. His aim is to create visually interesting designs that have the potential to stimulate the imagination, whilst compromising as little as possible on function and ergonomic efficiency. Originally trained as an aeronautical engineer, Jeremy is interested in the forms and structures of flight and the value of visual and physical balance.
