The CHIME network (Computer Human Interaction and Music nEtwork) is an EPSRC-funded research network in Music and Human Computer Interaction. The network aims to connect and assist researchers from diverse disciplines, whether just starting or established, whose interests span any combination of Music and Human Computer Interaction (also known as Music Interaction - MI)

We are pleased to announce the launch of CHIME (Computer Human Interaction and Music nEtwork), a three year EPSRC-funded network.The network will be running a range of events over the three year lifespan, including talks and workshops, but with a particular focus on training events of interest to early career researchers, post docs, PhD students, and anyone looking to develop skills in a new subdiscipline.You can find out more about the network and how to get involved at <a href="http://chime.ac.uk" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">http://chime.ac.uk</a>.For the network’s launch April 2022 event we are pleased to welcome three distinguished guests: Wendy Mackay, Steinunn Arnardóttir and Magnus Felix Tryggvason.Wendy E. MackayCreating Co-Adaptive Instruments for Creative ExpressionComposing and playing music are highly embodied, creative activities. We use a participatory design approach to explore new forms of choreography and composition, with an emphasis on gesture and tangible interaction. We use a generative theory approach to develop co-adaptive instruments, which are based on instrumental interaction, where interaction is treated as a first class object, and co-adaptation, where users both learn (adapt to) and appropriate (adapt) interactive systems. Inspired by our work with choreographers and composers, we explore new forms of interactive systems, including interactive paper, that are easier to both learn and appropriate and support a wide variety of creative activities.Steinunn Arnardottir &amp; Magnus Felix TryggvasonNo keys, buttons or knobs: Music interfaces on mobile platforms for future generationsToday’s music creation and production workflows tend to be complex with a steep learning curve. Can we start introducing concepts and interfaces to children from a young age in a play-based setting? Can this help them build an early understanding of the basics - and plant seeds of interest to continue learning? Furthermore, can we use mobile platforms to innovate on the process as we bring future generations on board? At Lottie we are together with pedagogs and psychologists developing experiences on a tablet based product that help young children develop across several areas, including - and very importantly - creativity &amp; music making.___________________Speaker BiographiesWendy E. Mackay is a Research Director, Classe Exceptionnelle, at Inria, the French National Research Center for Computer Science, and is an ACM Fellow, CHI academy member and the 2022 Chair for Computer Science at the Collège de France. Wendy directs the ExSitu (Extreme Situated Interaction) research lab, which focuses on creative professionals and 'extreme users' who push the limits of technology, to develop novel human-computer partnerships. Her lab is joint with the Human-Computer Interaction department of LISN at the Université Paris-Saclay, where she teaches interaction design. Her current research interests focus on the intersection between human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence and the creation of human-computer partnerships.Steinunn Arnardottir is CTO and co-founder of Lottie, a Berlin based start-up helping kids navigate the digital world. She has over 10 years of experience from the Music Tech industry as a Research DSP Engineer and later Senior Director of Engineering at Native Instruments, a leading manufacturer of software and hardware for computer-based music production and DJing. She holds a B.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Iceland and M.A. in Music Science and Technology and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, both from Stanford University.Magnus Felix Tryggvason is a Senior Frontend Developer at Lottie, where his main focus is on designing interactive experiences for young children. Before that he spent 5 years working as an interaction engineer at KISKA, an Austrian product design agency. He has been producing music for the last 10 years. He has several releases to his name one of which was nominated to the Icelandic Music Awards. He holds a B.Sc in Computer Science and Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark.
