HIV-associated disruption of host immunity: A view from the human lung

We are delighted to present Professor Henry Mwandumba as our final speaker in this 2022 Almroth Wright lecture series, speaking on:HIV-associated disruption of host immunity: A view from the human lung.This will be an online only event.Abstract: The lung is the site most commonly affected by infectious and non-infectious complications of HIV infection, even in individuals on effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) with undetectable viraemia in peripheral blood. Our group’s work aims to characterise HIV-associated disruption of host immunity in the airways and its impact on pathogen-specific immune responses. We have reported that HIV infection is associated with lymphocytic alveolitis characterised by the influx of CD8+ T cells into the alveolar space, which forms part of the anti-viral response against HIV. Additionally, we have shown that antigen-specific CD4+ T cell responses to common respiratory pathogens differ both in quality and magnitude between lung alveolar and peripheral blood CD4+ T cells. Furthermore, impairment of CD4+ T cell immune responses against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and influenza virus in HIV-infected adults was more pronounced in alveolar than peripheral blood cells, indicating that immune responses are compartmentalised and are impacted differentially by HIV infection. In this lecture, I will discuss how we have advanced current understanding of HIV pathogenesis in the human lung and present exciting new data on airway macrophage heterogeneity and its impact on control of respiratory infections.About the speaker: Professor Henry Mwandumba is Deputy Director of the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Clinical Research Programme (MLW) in Blantyre, Malawi where he is based. He is Head of the Mucosal and Vascular Immunology Group at MLW, Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Malawi, and Honorary Consultant Physician at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool. Henry studied medicine at the University of Zimbabwe School of Medicine and specialised in General (Internal) Medicine and Infectious Diseases in Liverpool. His clinical research focuses on understanding the immunopathogenesis of HIV-associated illnesses to improve patient outcomes. His research has three major themes: HIV, Tuberculosis and Vascular diseases. Henry is Immediate Past President of the Federation of African Immunological Societies (FAIS) and Treasurer of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACoP). His research is supported by funding from Wellcome, Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Medical Research Council (MRC), UK and the German Research Foundation (DFG). He was Cornell University’s Distinguished African Scholar in 2015, was awarded the MRC/DfID African Research Leader Award in 2017 and the Royal Society Africa Prize in 2019.
