Fireside Chat series features people, ideas and projects in open and reproducible research.

On 29 April 2022, 15:00-16:30 UTC (<a href="https://arewemeetingyet.com/UTC/2022-04-29/15:00" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">in your timezone</a>): the next fireside chat will take place on the topic: “Enabling Inclusive Research Conferencing in the ‘Post-Pandemic Era’”. Over the past 2 and a half years, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a reckoning with how scientific research is done across international borders – and how scientific conferencing is done in turn. Alongside the shift to “working from home”, conferences also moved online. But as many events begin to move back to in-person events in the coming months and years, this Fireside chat brings together diverse voices from different projects and communities to talk more about the role of conferences in scientific collaboration, and the trade-offs involved in this shift back to in-person conferences.Chaired by <a href="https://lwinfree.github.io/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lilly Winfree</a> and <a href="https://www.aleesteele.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Anne Lee Steele</a>, this panel will feature insights from <a href="https://eliocamp.github.io/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Elio Campitelli</a>, <a href="https://www.wsl.ch/en/employees/hugpeter.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dorothea Hug Peter</a>, <a href="https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/oped/commentary/digital-diplomacy-what-needs-to-be-done-3567174?view=htmlamp" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gilbert Beyamba</a>, and <a href="https://remotely.green/team/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ben Krikler</a>. These researchers represent different communities with expertise and insights from working with and participating in conferences (read their bios below). We will also facilitate open discussions with attendees to learn about their perspectives on the topic via a shared document (links shared upon registration). <h2>About the speakers</h2><a href="https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/oped/commentary/digital-diplomacy-what-needs-to-be-done-3567174?view=htmlamp" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gilbert Beyamba</a><a href="https://remotely.green/team/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a> is the Director of Programs at Pollicy, a Uganda-based feminist collective of technologists, data scientists, creatives, and academics working at the intersection of data, design, and technology in Sub-Saharan Africa. Pollicy, as a thought leader in data use, takes a deliberate approach to improving data literacy among various stakeholders through training, workshops, events, and engagements hosted in-person, online or hybrid. Pollicy&#x27;s training focuses on building data literacy amongst our civil society and government partners. We also connect our partners and host a number of convenings aimed at furthering the discourse on data use. This includes an annual event called <a href="https://datafestkampala.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">DataFest</a>, a multi-day conference in East and West Africa that examines the integral role that data plays in everyday life.and quarterly events called DataClub. They are a founding member of the R User Group in Buenos Aires and an outstanding contributor to the LatinR conference. They are a contributor and former core team member of <a href="https://www.metadocencia.org/en/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">MetaDocencia</a> where they lead and design workshops teaching evidence-based educational tools. As part of the organising committee of UseR!2021 they helped to implement accessibility-aware registration and chat solutions.<a href="https://remotely.green/team/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ben Krikler</a> is the CEO and Founder of <a href="https://remotely.green/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">RemotelyGreen</a>. He is a social entrepreneur with 10 years experience in international particle physics research. He adds -- &quot;I love what we’re doing with <a href="https://remotely.green/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">RemotelyGreen </a>- looking at all the individual pieces that build up an event and putting them back together. Humans are sociable creatures, and a key part of joining an event is the people we meet. We’ve heard from participants that we’re more fun and less stressful than in-person. Remotely.&quot; <a href="https://www.wsl.ch/en/employees/hugpeter.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dorothea Hug Peter</a> is an environmental scientist with a strong focus on freshwater: aquatic ecology, conservation, water quality and water availability. She is currently a scientific collaborator at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest Snow and Landscape Research. She was one of the initiators to bring useR! 2021 to Zurich and fully embraced the decision to go online and global in summer 2020. She was one of the global coordinators of this online edition.<h2>About the facilitators</h2><a href="https://lwinfree.github.io/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lilly Winfree</a> is a product manager of <a href="https://frictionlessdata.io/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Frictionless Data</a> at the Open Knowledge Foundation. She combines her science background with her technical abilities to teach researchers how to use open source data tools and standards to make their data better managed. Working at the intersection of open source, open data, and open science, she manages several collaborations, grantees, and a Frictionless Data Fellowship program. She has also designed and delivered several workshops and talks at international conferences. She has worked on a variety of projects remotely in the open ecosystem, including at the Internet Society, Wikimedia Deutschland, and Open Knowledge Foundation.<h2>About the hosting organisations</h2><a href="https://the-turing-way.netlify.app/welcome" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Turing Way</a> is an open source, open collaboration, and community-driven handbook on Data Science. We involve and support a diverse community of contributors to make research and data science accessible, comprehensible and effective for everyone. Our goal is to provide all the information that researchers and data scientists in academia, industry and the public sector need to ensure that the projects they work on are easy to reproduce and reuse. The MetaDocencia community members collaboratively develop open, reusable, and accessible resources to foster effective training practices. MetaDocencia teaches online synchronous workshops in Spanish. These workshops are designed with higher education teachers in mind, but instructors teaching outside of higher education and students who want to collaborate in classes also participate.<a href="https://frictionlessdata.io/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Frictionless Data</a> is a progressive open-source framework for building data infrastructure – data management, data integration, data flows, and so on. It includes various data standards and provides software to work with data. The Frictionless Data project aims to make it easier to work with data - by reducing common data workflow issues (friction) through software and standards. The project also offer <a href="https://fellows.frictionlessdata.io/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Frictionless Data Reproducible Research Fellows Programme</a>, supported by the Sloan Foundation and Open Knowledge Foundation, that trains early career researchers to become champions of the Frictionless Data tools and approaches in their field.
