Volunteering Together: Inclusive Volunteering and Disabled People

Spirit of 2012 was established as an independent Trust by the National Lottery Community Fund in 2013 to build on the legacy of the London 2012 Games. We do this by funding projects and research that enable people to participate in a wide variety of activities from physical activity to the arts and volunteering, and focus on evaluation to fully understand why and how taking part can make people feel better and more connected to their communities.

The pandemic saw a surge in volunteering with 12.4 million people offered their time in 2020. Among this group were 4.6 million first-time volunteers, including 360,000 people who were disabled or had a long-term health condition. Despite there being significant numbers of disabled volunteers in the UK, there are some major gaps in what is known about their experiences and barriers they may face in offering their time. To help organisations better understand the needs of disabled people, and open up more volunteering opportunities, Spirit of 2012 has funded research into inclusive volunteering. The study has been carried out by a team coordinated by Kim Donahue Associates. They have analysed new data from the Understanding Society Survey as well as undertaking six in-depth case studies of organisations that work with volunteers. The research team will present their findings on 26th May. The webinar will also be a chance to discuss the implications of the findings on policy and practice. We will have responses from volunteers, civil society and the Shaping the Future with Volunteering and Vision for Volunteering initiatives.
