A training event to enable healthcare professionals to make referrals to the NHS Low Calorie Diet Programme being piloted in West Yorkshire.

The NHS is delivering a new programme which provides a low calorie diet treatment for people who are overweight or obese and living with type 2 diabetes.The NHS Low Calorie Diet Programme is an innovative and free one-year programme which aims to support healthier lifestyles, weight loss, and remission of type 2 diabetes. It works by offering 12 weeks of a low calorie diet (shakes and soups) followed by four weeks of gradual food reintroduction and eight months of weight maintenance, achieved through healthy eating, movement and online support. Following a successful trial the programme is now being piloted in nine areas including West Yorkshire. By joining this one-hour staff information session you will get an overview about: •	the aims of the programme and how it works•	the patient journey and benefits •	supporting evidence and data from past trials•	eligibility and exclusions•	the referral pathway, identifying and inviting patients •	next stepsWe have already held this event on three separate occasions in March and April 2022. This is an additional date to meet demand and enable more people to attend who might have missed one of the previous sessions. Who should attend? This event is aimed at GPs, nurses, practice diabetes leads and medicine management colleagues working with people who are overweight and have type 2 diabetes. Dieticians and anyone who does medication reviews will also find this event helpful.The pilot is a digital offer. It will run for two years and is limited to 500 patients across West Yorkshire. To help tackle health inequalities across our area, the focus will be on improving access to patients from deprived and ethnic minority communities. Helping people diagnosed with diabetes to lose weight, and make better decisions about their health enables them to better control their blood sugar levels – reducing the need for diabetes-related medication and potentially achieving remission of their type 2 diabetes. Data shows that people on the programme who are eating and drinking the low calorie alternatives not only lose weight but keep it off over time.
