With the built environment contributing to nearly 40% of global carbon emissions there is a growing need to decarbonise our buildings. Improving the energy efficiency of built space not only plays a pivotal role in reducing the urban environment’s carbon footprint but also makes commercial sense for asset owners.

This talk will look to explore the opportunities and challenges in retrofitting built space for improved operational energy efficiency. The focus will be the four pillars underpinning the University of Melbourne’s Smart Campus strategy (i) economic benefits, (ii) carbon management, (iii) indoor environmental quality and (iv) living laboratory opportunities.

Prof. Olmo Silva of London School of Economics will be chairing this talk.

About the Speaker: Ruth is currently the Energy and Projects Officer at the University of Melbourne. In this role she is responsible for the University’s Smart Campus Energy Upgrades Program (SCEU). The SCEU is a $45million scope of works that covers the application of energy efficiency and generation technologies across University of Melbourne buildings. Prior to working at the University of Melbourne Ruth was an Investment and Asset Manager in London for eight years with her most recent role being at Tristan Capital Partners. At Tristan Capital Partners Ruth managed a £2bn portfolio of UK mixed use commercial real estate and was company lead on Environmental, Social and Governance.

Ruth studied her undergraduate in Economics at the University of Warwick. She also holds a Masters from the London School of Economics and Political Science in Real Estate Economics and Finance, and a Masters of Environment (specialising in sustainable building and urban design) from the University of Melbourne.
