Discover the fascinating nature living in familiar places, or visit somewhere new. Our nature experts delve into local ecology in this series of themed walks in Leicester and Leicestershire

<h2>Guided Walk </h2><h2>St Mary&#x27;s Open Space and Hughenden Drive</h2><h2>Saturday 9th July at 10am</h2><h2>Meet at the corner of Hughenden Drive and Aylestone Road</h2><p></p><h3>Come and explore the nature in our city! St Mary&#x27;s Open Space is a former allotment site and a vital green space in a built-up area of Leicester, with native trees and mixed-species grassland as well as a community orchard. Learn how the legacy of the site shapes the species we find there today, and discover the variety of flowering plants growing amongst the grass.  </h3><h3>We will walk at a steady pace, stopping for a closer look at the wildlife that crosses our path. A moderate level of fitness is required to walk and stand for up to 2 hours, sometimes on unpaved paths. </h3><h3>Please check the weather forecast and wear clothing that will keep you comfortable during your walk. </h3><p>This walk is free to attend but numbers are limited. Adults - please book your places. Booking is not required for children (under 16) but they must be accompanied by an adult. </p><p> If you are no longer able to attend, please cancel via Eventbrite or contact us on 0116 454 3947 (during office hours)so we can offer your place to someone else.</p><p><strong>Please note: </strong>local car parking is limited so please walk, get the bus or cycle if you are able. There is a regular bus service and a city e-bike stand at Aylestone Leisure Centre near the meeting point for this walk. </p><p></p><h3>Saving the Saffron Brook project</h3><p>Leicester City Council is partnering with the Trent Rivers Trust and a number of local organisations to deliver an exciting nature conservation project in Knighton, Saffron Lane and Oadby. The scheme focuses on key sites along the Saffron Brook / Wash Brook watercourse, an important nature corridor linking urban habitats with the county and beyond. We will create habitat for otters, bats, &amp; kingfishers, plant trees and meadow grassland and dig new ponds.</p><p>As well as improving habitats for wildlife we will be offering a range of opportunities for people to connect with nature. Whether through guided nature walks, active volunteer days, wildlife I.D. sessions or family play, we hope there will be something for everyone to enjoy. During walks, we kindly ask walkers to respect the space of other walkers, as some people may prefer to maintain social distancing from others.</p>
