Workshop with Irish Artist Fion Gunn as part of her residency at the Institute of Irish Studies, focusing on Fion's film ‘Child of our time'

This workshop is the first in a series of events by Irish artist Fion Gunn as part of her year-long residency with the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool. The residency was launched on 31 of March 2022 and includes an exhibition of Fion&#x27;s work at the University&#x27;s Victoria Gallery &amp; Museum from 30 July until 23 December 2022.During this workshop Fion will present her film ‘Child of our Time’ – a tribute to Eavan Boland and display some mixed media artworks which address the experience of women at times of war and its aftermath – the collateral lives of collateral victims. Following the film presentation, Fion will be in conversation with Dr Richard Benjamin, Visiting Professor of Slavery and Public Engagement at the University of Liverpool and Head of the International Slavery Museum, Liverpool. Audience members are warmly invited to join this conversation.Describing the impact of Boland’s writing on her own work Fion Gunn remarked “Eavan Boland, was an inspirational and under-recognised Irish poet. I first read her poem &#x27;Child of our Time&#x27; as a 15 year old, after the terrible bombing in Dublin in which three babies were killed. It has stayed with me ever since.”Fion will explore different perspectives of war and conflict, as an artist, a curator, childhood experience and the legacy of family.Fion Gunn was born and raised in the city centre of Cork, graduated from Crawford College of Art &amp; Design, and spent a post-graduate year at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Supérieure de Nancy. She has exhibited across Europe and China, and has won multiple awards for her work from Arts Council England, Arts Council Ireland, and Culture Ireland. Gunn lives and works in London.
