The Sugar Summit in Brussels #SugarSummit

Sugarwiseis a charity dedicated to the prevention of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes as well as other non communicable diseases influenced by lifestyle. We operate certification for sugar, calorie and carbohydrate claims on food and drink, using the SUGARWISE mark. The SUGARWISE mark gives assurance that products on which the logo appears have been independently assessed and are low in free sugars - the sugars that the World Health Organisation recommends limiting to no more than 5% of daily calories - low in calories or low in carbohydrates. The organisation's mission is: (1)to increase the amount of lower free sugar choices people have available to them, and (2) to raise awareness of and generate greater demand for lower sugar options. The Sugar Summit  is being held in the Brussels European Parliament on Wednesday 6th September from 5-7pm. It will be a round table discussion on how to increase the availability, visibility, and demand for products low in sugar and calories. 
Join participants from Lidl, Unilever, BLL, Cargill, Mondelēz, Sun-Maid, Danone, Ferrero, Euromonitor, Cavalier, EU Observer, EU Food Law, SLUYS International, CHOICES International Foundation, Hyet Sweet, Tg Teas and others to discuss key issues surrounding sugar and calorie reduction. Topics include the potential impact of BREXIT on Childhood Obesity, how to achieve product reformulations and improve the availability of convenient food and drink that is lower in added sugar and calories.

Rend Platings founded Sugarwise due to concerns about excess sugar consumption for her daughter. Her idea was for a recognisable mark that would identify products low in free sugars. A former Diplomat and consultant to TRADOC and the Westpoint Military Academy. Through Sugarwise, Rend hopes to improve food labelling by making lower sugar alternatives more visible and available to the public.

More can be done to encourage greater uptake of lower sugar and lower calorie options.
We are shifting the focus of the debate towards positive steps to be taken to highlight healthier alternatives to sugary treats to consumers. A constructive conversation is expected.

(1) Availability: Getting lower sugar and lower calorie options onto shelves and menus

How do we get more lower sugar and lower calorie options onto retailer shelves and restaurant menus? Best practice examples include McDonald's providing cut fruit bags as a dessert option in Happy Meals, and Aldi providing a range of lower and no added sugar options in confectionary.
