Showcase performance of a project about Pakistani culture and heritage explored through creative writing inspired by old folk songs

‘Tappay Tales’ is the brain child of Abda Khan - a very unique project focusing on capturing and preserving old Pakistani folk songs, and using them to explore Pakistani culture &amp; heritage, past and present, through creative writing &amp; performance.Abda held sharing sessions with members of the Pakistani/South Asian community in Birmingham who shared their traditional Pakistani folk/wedding songs. She then transliterated and translated these old verses. These verses were then used as inspiration for creative writing workshops in Birmingham, for the participants to create pieces of work linking the old and the new through themes such as culture, heritage and identity. New poetry has also been produced, inspired by these old songs.This event will include performances of the new writing and poetry, recitation in translation of some of the old songs and explorations of their historical roots, and heart touching drama, taking you back in time, inspired by the song 'Sada Chiryaan Da Chamba'.

ABOUT ABDA KHANAbda Khan is a lawyer turned writer. She mainly writes literary fiction, and is the author of two published novels. Stained (2016, Harvard Square Editions, described by Booklist USA as the ‘contemporary Tess of the d’Urbervilles) and Razia (2019, Unbound) as well as works in a number of anthologies.She also teaches creative writing and undertakes various creative projects. Abda is also a mentor, campaigner, public speaker, Desi Blitz Arts Ambassador, and a Lloyds Bank Women of the Future Ambassador.She is committed to community engagement, and likes to be actively involved in projects that allow for engagement from members of communities that are generally underrepresented in the creative arts sector.Abda has received recognition for her work: a ‘True Honour’ Award in 2017 from IKWRO (Iranian &amp; Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation), Highly Commended as a finalist (in the Arts &amp; Culture category) in the Nat West Asian Women of Achievement Awards 2017 and she won British Muslim Woman of the Year in the British Muslim Awards 2019.
