The Living Legacy - The HHG 'Experiences in Communities' first annual event

The Henderson Heritage Group (HHG) is an unincorporated, non-profit organisation consisting of people who lived at or worked at one of the Henderson Communities. We have come together to preserve the archive and memory of the Henderson Heritage Communities, and to think about ways in which aspects of the collective work of the three Communities can continue to shape future directions in health and social care and in the survivor movement.

Exploring the living legacy of the Henderson Hospital Democratic Therapeutic Communities at Henderson, Webb House and Main House

The original Henderson Hospital unit was opened at Belmont Hospital in 1947 under the leadership of pioneering psychiatrist Maxwell Jones and was for sixty years an internationally-renowned centre of excellence for the humane treatment of trauma survivors and the epitome of the Democratic Therapeutic Community model. It closed its doors for the last time in 2008 after impacting the lives of generations of people who lived and worked there and at the sister Communities of Webb House and Main House. What is the living legacy of the Henderson Communities that is being carried forward by those who were changed by the experiences they offered? How can their ethos and their model for negotiating relationships now inform the health and social care of those who have experienced trauma? What role can be played by their history and heritage, as explored through their archives, oral history and art? What can they teach us about therapeutic relationships, the balance of power, the practice of equality and the value of a human life? Please join us on Friday 21 October from 6-8 pm via Zoom to address these questions with a panel of speakers with lived experience of the Henderson Communities at the Henderson Heritage Group’s inaugural annual Experiences in Communities Event. Presentations will be followed by reflection and discussion in small and large groups.A proportion of the available tickets are offered free of charge. Our hope is that this will make it possible for people from a wide range of backgrounds and different life circumstances, with diverse experiences of diverse communities, to attend. Please do purchase a ticket if you feel comfortable about paying the entrance fee (which is £10) so that plenty of tickets are available for anyone who might not feel in a position to pay.
