State of Play: Full day design and gaming workshop

The Glass-House Community Led Design is a national charity dedicated to connecting people with the design of their places, and connecting design with people. For over two decades, we have supported communities, organisations and networks to work collaboratively to shape buildings, spaces, homes and neighbourhoods.The Glass-House sees design not only as a tool for creating great places, but also as a way to connect people and empower them with enhanced confidence, skills and a greater sense of agency. We provide hands-on support and training, share knowledge and learning, and inspire new thinking and debate through action research, events and resources.

What if children could use gaming to help express their ideas about the play spaces they would like to have in real life?

The State of Play: Full-day design and gaming workshopChildren today play differently from the generations before them, with virtual gaming worlds offering creative spaces to imagine and design their own environments. Join us on 12 August for a free, full-day (10am to 4pm) workshop for children aged 10 to 11 and their parents/guardians, where you will explore The State of Play in the past, present and future. Children will be using Roblox Studio to design and build play spaces within a secure workspace within the Roblox online gaming environment. Parents will look back on the places where they played as children, and then work with the children to imagine play spaces of the future. This is a space to play together, and to design together. <ul><li>Enjoy a virtual tour of a range of play areas and explore how their design affects the way we play and how we feel.</li><li>Learn how to use Roblox Studio and its building tools.</li><li>Work together to co-design and build your ideal play area in Roblox Studio</li></ul>This workshop is a collaboration between <a href="https://theglasshouse.org.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Glass-House Community Led Design </a>and <a href="https://thenvm.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The National Videogame Museum</a> in Sheffield to offer our full-day gaming workshop designed with children for children. Join us for a playful day of designing together. Lunch will also be provided.Children taking part will receive a certificate, and both children and their guardians will each receive a voucher for admission to a session at the National Videogame Museum. This workshop is for children aged 10 to 11 and their parents and guardians. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Each adult may bring up to two children, but will need to register each child separately. This is a free event with lunch included but places are limited. This workshop has been co-designed and will be co-facilitated with students from the University of Sheffield’s <a href="https://sites.google.com/sheffield.ac.uk/tap/home" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Transforming and Activating Places</a> Internship programme and a young facilitator (aged 14) who helped us conceive and develop <a href="https://theglasshouse.org.uk/our-work/innovating-practice/empowering-children-in-design-through-gaming/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Glass-House gaming workshop approach</a>.
