Cocoa sustainability in a changing climate

We know that climate change is right now affecting the people who have done the least to cause it, but how do we talk about that? How do we move the conversation on from consumers in the global North feeling sorry for producers in the global South but really centre the voices, experience and knowledge of farmers and workers in areas like cocoa which have their roots in colonial inequalities. Cocoa stories is a series of events that do just that - centring the lived experience of African experts.The demand for cocoa is increasing globally as the appetite for cocoa products, especially chocolate, has become a global cultural phenomenon with significant market value around the world. The cocoa production sector, dominated largely by countries in the tropics, is however faced with several interconnected challenges that have threatened the sector for many years. While famer poverty, unfair pricing, deforestation, and child labor issues remain enduring challenges within the cocoa sector, the emergent reality of climate change has further compounded existing challenges to threaten the future of cocoa production. Such threats are not seen or heard of by the ardent, anxious, and consummate chocolate lover. They are muted in shelf-life chocolate narratives. We need to foreground what climate change means to cocoa production and to chocolate consumption. Dr Bob Manteaw will join us for an exploration of the effects of climate change on Ghanaian cocoa farmers and how the global fair trade movement can work together to move the conversation on constructively.
