Dr Helen Wickstead presents her research on handmade pornography that circulated in London in the '50s and '60s  - a.k.a the Soho Bibles

Tickets for this event are on a sliding scale. We want our events to be as accessible as possible, so we encourage those who are able to afford the standard ticket price pay accordingly, in order to subsidise those who are not. £8: Standard£4: low income/unwaged Soho Typescripts - also known as Soho Bibles - were a distinctive type of handmade pornography associated with London&#x27;s Soho in the 1950s and 1960s. Thousands were &#x27;published&#x27;, but only a proportion survive today. The production of a Soho Typescript began when a porn merchant commissioned a writer, or a writer sold their manuscript. These exchanges often took place in Soho&#x27;s bohemian public houses and clubs, which mixed up London&#x27;s class strata, bringing porn merchants and sex workers into contact with hard-up writers and artists. Dr Helen Wickstead&#x27;s study of these rare and collectable books brings the streets of post-war Soho - and the characters who inhabited them - back to life. This event is programmed to coincide with the Museum of Sex Objects&#x27; exhibition at The Horse Hospital, which continues from the 2nd September to the 29th September 2022. Dr Helen Wickstead is the course director of MA Museum and Gallery Studies at Kingston School of Art. Due to space constraints, tickets are limited. Book now to avoid disappointment.
