Sinister Houses & Forbidden Loves: A Beginner’s Guide to Gothic Romance Comics with Lillian Hochwender

The 1970s gothic romance boom never truly took hold in comics and the few feeble attempts to enter the genre by publishers may seem inconsequential. Yet, the genre’s existence at the intersection of horror, romance, and crime allow us a peek at how censorship has shaped comics publishing and the stories that are only now being told. This talk will offer attendees an introductory overview of 1970s gothic romance comics, focusing on their relationship to the 1970s gothic boom and the strict censorship of the Comics Code Authority. We’ll also take a look at examples of modern post-Code gothic romance comics, with a focus on queer stories like Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love and Poison Ivy: Thorns. We’ll conclude by exploring the continued role of censorship in present-day comics publishing.</p>
