#FlourishinginMedicine 2022

Prof Louise Younie & Flourishing Spaces team

#FlourishinginMedicine brings people together across disciplines, hierarchies, space and place, to explore flourishing in #MedEd and beyond

We are in the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time that is known to be fraught with post-traumatic stress and burnout amongst healthcare workers. To speak of flourishing helps to move the wellbeing conversation beyond the idea of resilience and toughing it out alone, towards something more interpersonal and ecological, connecting our inner lives with the ebb and flow of loss and renewal, death and growth. Flourishing is about connection with our values, with purpose and meaning (Aristotle’s eudaimonia), engaging with compassion with our own humanity and that of others.
The human dimension of clinical practice is often left unexplored in medical education and beyond, sometimes called the &#x27;soft stuff&#x27;, yet seasoned clinicians know it is the hardest stuff - requiring wisdom in trying to understand and support our patients in the most helpful way for them within the constraints of time and the systems we work in.
This human dimension of practice is subjective and uncertain, requiring listening, epistemic humility and reflexivity. <a href="https://sites.google.com/view/humanflourishingmeded/home" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Creative enquiry</a> has the potential to explore the human dimension of practice, enable new insight into ourselves and others, to build trust and relationship, allowing for flourishing. This half-day symposium aims to create an enjoyable space for human connection and collaborative exploration of flourishing - a concept which is only just entering into medical education thinking and still requiring definition but offers a different approach to wellbeing. It builds on previous <a href="https://sites.google.com/view/flourishinginmedicine/symposium-2020" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Flourishing Symposium 2020</a><a href="https://sites.google.com/view/flourishinginmedicine/post-symposium" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>, <a href="https://sites.google.com/view/flourishinginmedicine/symposium-2021" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Flourishing Symposium 2021</a>... for more detail see last years <a href="https://padlet.com/louise_younie/qjfqnmgkzbmr05rb" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">padlet</a> where people posted thoughts and ideas...Themes include:- Metaphor of tree work, water and sustainability in flourishing- Kindness, compassion, self-care- how is wellbeing addressed in our institutions and how can we do better?Since our first flourishing symposium we have:- <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qYoYtxkSy2q5FdXPtuWmM4SqG2vujvEE/view" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">written about the meaning of flourishing in medical education</a>- <a href="https://bhma.org/product/flourishing-in-medical-education/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">co-edited a whole volume on flourishing in medicine</a>- <a href="https://sites.google.com/view/humanflourishingmeded/creative-enquiry-projects/creative-arts-ssc" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">medical students have been exploring flourishing in medicine</a>Pre-symposium sharing will be built up over the month of August so that when we meet, most of our time together will be co-creative rather than listening to presentations.
