If you have any questions please contact us by email at events@britishkitesports.org.OVERVIEWThe British Freestyle Championships objective is to deliver a high quality competition that is enjoyable for the riders and provides a platform for them to demonstrate their talent and develop their skills. The championships also provide a springboard to the GKA Kite World Tour and International competitions.  Riders are encouraged to support each other during the events. To deliver the best possible experience it would be greatly appreciated if every rider offered a bit of assistance when they are not competing (eg judging other categories, flag holder, beach marshal, launching &amp; landing, commentating etc). In this way we can deliver the best possible event for each other. Briefing and Registration.Briefing and registration times will be set out on the Friday (on Facebook), briefings and registrations are mandatory. If you are late or do not attend you will be disqualified. At a lot of events we are restricted with time due to wind and tides, so to ensure the maximum competition time, we need to run smoothly, and all competitors need to help with this.FreestyleWind permitting the main focus will be the Freestyle Championship.There will be the following categories:<ul><li>Open Men</li><li>Open Women</li><li>Amateur Men</li><li>Amateur Women </li><li>Junior Girls</li><li>Junior Boys</li></ul>A minimum of three riders are required for each category. In the event of categories only having 1 or 2 riders, these will be merged with the appropriate other gender fleet.In each category the first, second and third place will be recognised. There will also be recognition of the highest scoring Over 40 and Under 18 within the Open Category. This is subject to a minimum of 3 riders in these age brackets.The format for the events will be a Dingle Elimination to allow us time to get through all the heats. If conditions limit time this will switch to a Single Elimination to allow us to complete the event as fully as possible. If conditions further limit time we may run expression sessions to allow the opportunity for riders to compete despite severe time restrictions, the expression sessions will not expected to count towards overall titles.First Round heats will consist of either 2, 3 or a maximum of 4 riders depending on the number of riders entering the category. Foil FreestyleIn addition to the main freestyle championship we will run a foil freestyle competition at each event should conditions and time allow. All entrants for the main freestyle event are eligible to enter the foil freestyle competition.Format will be an expression session judged on the best trick during that session.Wing FreestyleDuring the weekend if the opportunity presents itself we will organsise a wing freestyle expression session or perhaps a fun race. Other awardsAdditional awards will be presented for categories such as best crash, best trick, best sportsmanship, best newcomer. Categories will be determined to reflect the conditions and action at each event.EntryEntry is open to all BKSA Members - you will need a valid membership card and number with you when you complete registration at the event.We will be running the registration through Event Brite. You will need to PRE REGISTER for each event. There will be NO registration at the event.Age Divisions:Open – No age restrictionsAmateur – 16 +Junior – 15 and underFor age categories (Under 18, Over 40, 15 and under, 16 and over we will use age on 12th September (last day of championship)Ability Levels:Open – All round freestyle. Judged on overall impression.Amateur - All-round freestyle. No Handle-passes. Judged on overall impression. Aimed at non-sponsored riders. Anyone wanting to improve their riding through the motivation of competition.Junior - All-round freestyle. Judged on overall impression. Conditions:Wind readings will be taken during the heat transition, based on a 1-minute average.Juniors will compete in a minimum of 12 mph (1 min average).Amateur and Open fleets will compete in a minimum of 15mph (1 min average). If we get a sustained 12mph we may run an expression session for Open riders but the results may not count for the overall championship.Foil freestyle will compete if there is enough wind for a minimum of 3 proficient riders to get moving on a foil.If wind is strong enough we may adjust the scoring criteria to reward &quot;big air&quot; moves in preference to &quot;freestyle&quot;.Entry feesOpen £40Amateur £35Juniors £30FREE FIRST ENTRY- Amateurs and Juniors only- Must pre-register for the event - No previous entry to British Kitesurf Championships (in any year)- If no wind for the event you enter it will still count as your free entry.- Please enter and pay on Eventbrite, a refund will be provided at the event.PrizesPrize Money for the Open fleet will be the same for men and womenIf no event runs over the entire series the prize fund will roll over to next yearNo refunds for lack of wind (we still have to provide all the judges / event costs etc whether there is a competition or not)All other fleets will receive product prizes.In addition, the best under 18 and over 40 in the Open fleet may receive a product prize depending on number of entries.The foil freestyle competition will reward 1st, 2nd and 3rd with product prizes.Competition AreaAt each event there will be an area for the competitors to rig up their kites on the beach, there will also be a launching area with kite launchers and landers on hand to help you get on the water. The competition area itself will be marked by a line of feather flags providing a transit on the beach at either end of the zone. The outer flag will be placed close to the waters edge. There may or may not be buoys on the water marking the area. This will enable us to quickly set up the event and will also mean we won’t be waiting for the rescue craft to move buoys around as the tide changes. The competition zone (scoring zone) is marked by the feather flags and will run at 90 degrees from the beach. 250m from shore is the outer limit. This is down to the judges discretion. The judges will be placed at an appropriate location for best view of the box, this is usually inline with the downwind competition zone flag. Start and FinishHeats shall be started with the following system: Red Flag Up – Horn – Beginning of transition ( Red flag time stated on ONB)Red Flag Down, Yellow Flag Up -1 Minute To StartYellow Flag Down, Green Flag Up – Horn - Heat Start Heats shall be finished with the following system:Green Flag Down - 1 Minute to Heat EndRed Flag Up – Horn - Heat Finishes - Beginning of Next Transition Heat and Transition Duration Heat and Transition Duration shall be posted at least 30 minutes before the heat in question on the Official Noticeboard. InterferencesInterference may be called if:1.    a kiteboard changes course to obstruct another kiteboard.2.     a kiteboard not in that heat enters the competition area when a heat is in play3.     there is deliberate unsportsmanlike action with the competitors in the heat.Interference Penalty:<ul><li>The Head Judge will decide on the penalty, if servere the rider may be disqualified from the event.</li></ul>Scoring SystemSeveral factors will be used to award tricks during freestyle competition. These are:Technical Difficulty – The technical difficulty of a trick completed during the heat.Power – The power during the execution of the tricks. Power will be considered as a combination of:<ul><li>Speed into the trick to pop, not using the kite to get the initial pop.</li><li>Height and amplitude of the trick.</li></ul>Height – Height of the trick completed during the heat. This aspect will exponentially come into consideration as the wind conditions increase, but only when the height is achieved along risk factor and technical difficulty.Variety – The variety of tricks completed during the heat is considered in the maximum number of different tricks to be counted for the final score per trick category.Risk factor – Is directly linked to the Power involved in the execution of the tricks, but also to the commitment of the competitor, technical and physical challenge during the execution, duration of the critical moment, amount and quality (lines direction) of the air in the trick, and energy on the execution.Smoothness – Smoothness and fluidity during the execution and landing of tricks completed during the heat.Innovation – Tricks that have never been landed in competition before.CrashesA crash will be considered when:<ol><li>1.     a competitor is capsized, losing control of the board or bar when landing a trick.</li><li>2.     a competitor grabs the bar leash to regain control of the bar.</li><li>3.     a competitor lands a trick but did not control the kite throughout the execution of the trick resulting in the release of the bar and/or the crashing of the kite into water after landing the trick.</li><li>4.     a competitor sinks and is completely stopped when landing a trick.</li><li>5.     a competitor lands on their back and the board is completely out of the water.</li></ol>Judges may give credit to a landed trick that is not a crash when:<ol><li>1.     a competitor butt-checks when landing the trick but keeps riding and control the kite.</li><li>2.     a competitor grabs the chicken loop to regain control of the bar.</li></ol> Overall Title The British Kitesurfing Championships are fully endorsed and supported by the BKSA as such the coveted British Title will be up for grabs for the winners of the open class, who will be the Male and Female British Champions.
