Sheffield Centre for Early Modern Studies welcomes you to this interdisciplinary colloquium on the theme of early modern space.

With funding from the Society for Renaissance Studies and the University of Sheffield&#x27;s School of English, the Sheffield Centre for Early Modern Studies is pleased to announce this interdisciplinary colloquium interrogating the theme of space, c.1500-1700.Recent studies on space have allowed researchers to better understand the material and social lives of those underrepresented in the historical record. With a keynote talk, taught practice-led sessions and a roundtable discussion, we hope to generate theoretical insights and practical methodologies for studying spatiality in historical societies. Ranging from the domestic to the global, from the scientific to the everyday, and from the stage to the street, delegates will be encouraged to consider and discuss new techniques, interrogating this timely theme both on the day and beyond.The day will run as follows:09:30-10:30 - Dr Paul Stock (London School of Economics): Keynote, ‘What is Spatial History?’10:30-10:45 - Tea and coffee break10:45-11:45 - Dr Cora James (University of Sheffield): Workshop, ‘Gender and Space on the Early Modern Stage’11:45-12:00 - Tea and coffee break12:00-13:00 - Louise McCarthy (Université Paris Cité): Workshop, ‘Mapping Treasures and Trade in the English Imagination’13:00-14:30 - Lunch break *14:30-15:30 - Dr Lucy Clarke (University of Oxford): Workshop, ‘Managing Space: Exploring the Contingencies of Early Modern Authority through Practice-as-Research’15:30-16:00 - Tea and coffee break16:30-17:30 - Roundtable discussion, led by Leonie Price and Emily Naish (both University of Sheffield)From 18:30 - Conference dinner **The colloquium will run as a hybrid event: if you plan to attend online, please register in order to receive the link.Travel bursariesThanks to the funding from the Society for Renaissance Studies, we have five bursaries available for Postgraduate Researchers and Early Career Researchers, including a hardship fund, reserved for self-funded PGRs and ECRs.
