Talk by Sarah Wise: ‘God is watching the grasping capitalists’: Annie Macpherson’s child rescue work in Hackney, Shoreditch and Spitalfields, 1870-1900The ‘emigration’ of thousands of poor London children in the 19th century provoked widespread opposition from some commentators. Why should poverty mean exile for London infants?, they wondered. In this illustrated talk, Sarah Wise focuses on the work of Christian evangelical Annie Macpherson in East London, whose rescue and resettlement work won admiration as well as bitter criticism.Sarah Wise is the author of three books of Victorian social history – the second, The Blackest Streets, is a portrait of the Old Nichol slum, on the Shoreditch/Bethnal Green border.She teaches 19th-century social history and literature to adult learners at the City Lit and the Bishopsgate Institute and to visiting undergraduates from the University of California.
