Join us as our workshop writers perform pieces based on the lives Westgate's historical residents, read in the buildings they called home.

Theatre Royal Wakefield

Join Empath Action CIC on Sunday, September 18th, when members of the public will perform monologues in, or directly outside, the buildings where famous and sometimes infamous people lived, worked and, for some, where they met an untimely end. Our citizen performers will invite us to listen to an eccentric lady who owned the Theatre (though it wasn't the same building we know today) and whose liking for cheese and tarts meant she had to dispense with her doctor; audiences will be asked to walk a mile (not really!) in the always hard-working Thomas Gissings' shoes as he forages for plants; and to imagine what it was like to have a zoo where the Orangery now stands, complete with a ferocious bear that, in a tragic incident, got free of its pit! Our audiences will start at the Theatre Royal, Wakefield at 11AM or 2PM, and together we will move up Westgate for a further two stops at Westgate Studios and the Gissing Centre for our quick performance tour.Chaperoning will be two of Empath's professional actors in character as Wakefield memoirist Henry Clarkson, and writer Lady Mary Green.Please note: while every care has been taken to select buildings that allow for maximum access, we will be walking up Westgate at a steady pace and, so please be prepared to do a small bit of moving between our three locations.
