Short description:

What happens when we slow down and take our time looking at the public spaces, buildings and monuments that surround us? This heritage trail takes you on a walk through Kelvingrove Park, stopping at various locations that speak to Glasgow’s past as a city of empire and imperial metropolis.

Long description:

You often hear Glasgow referred to as having been the ‘second city’ of empire, a nickname coined in the early-19th century that symbolised the might of its industry and the reach of its trade connections. The influence of Glasgow and its citizens was as evident in Kingston, Jamaica as Kingston, Ontario, and the city’s capacity for making and exporting all manner of goods, commodities and capital was well known. But what impact did the empire have here? What of its presence in Glesga?

Beginning at the eastern tip of Kelvingrove Park, we’ll wind our way along some of its footpaths and trails exploring sites that speak to Glasgow’s past as an imperial metropolis, a city shaped by its deep involvement in historic slavery, colonialism and imperialism. Traces of this past are largely invisible today – there are no signs or plaques telling us about this – but by slow walking and close looking we can bring these ‘hidden’ histories into focus.

Meeting point: Entrance to Kelvingrove Park at the intersection of Clifton Street and LaBelle Place.

Information about the organiser:

Rosie Spooner is a lecturer in Information Studies at the University of Glasgow. Her research and teaching concern the visual and material culture of empire and contemporary traces of this past in museum collections, heritage sites and the built environment. She is currently working on a project that explores walking as a critical heritage practice.This event is part of a research project at the University of Glasgow that examines walking as a critical heritage practice. Led by Dr Rosie Spooner in the School of Humanities, the project involves developing, leading and seeking feedback on guided walking tours and self-led walking resources. By joining this tour you are participating in the experience of collective walking. This will be documented through written field notes and occasionally photography (no recording devices will be used during the tours). At the end of each tour, attendees will be given the opportunity to share their experiences and provide feedback through completing a short survey. Participation is voluntary and all responses will be anonymised.
