Short description:Museums aren’t neutral. They construct knowledge and narrate the past. What stories do museums tell when it comes to historic slavery, colonialism and imperialism and their connections to empire? On this trail, we&#x27;ll think about these issues while walking through Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.Long description:The museum as we know it today came into being at the same time as European colonisation expanded across Asia, the Americas, Oceania and Africa. Museums in Britain benefited directly and indirectly from colonialism, whether through donations from individuals who worked in the colonies, deliberate collecting expeditions overseas, or the looting, seizure and dispersal of materials through imperial wars and violent conflict. Museums are anything but neutral.In recent years, debates about the repatriation of objects has captured headlines. But this is only one indicator of the deep connections between museums and empire. There are more subtle, but no lessdisconcerting legacies. What about the language used to describe objects and the ways they are exhibited? Is this history acknowledged? Were museums tools of empire and should a museum like Kelvingrove be decolonised? Is this even possible? On this trail, we’ll think about these issues while walking through Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. We&#x27;ll explore the history of this Glasgow landmark, in particular its links with historic slavery, colonialism and imperialism, and imagine ways of addressing the heritage of this difficult past.Meeting point: Outside the building near the rear entrance facing the car parkInformation about the organiser:Rosie Spooner is a lecturer in Information Studies at the University of Glasgow. Her research and teaching concern the visual and material culture of empire and contemporary traces of this past in museum collections, heritage sites and the built environment. She is currently working on a project that explores walking as a critical heritage practice.This event is part of a research project at the University of Glasgow that examines walking as a critical heritage practice. Led by Dr Rosie Spooner in the School of Humanities, the project involves developing, leading and seeking feedback on guided walking tours and self-led walking resources. By joining this tour you are participating in the experience of collective walking. This will be documented through written field notes and occasionally photography (no recording devices will be used during the tours). At the end of each tour, attendees will be given the opportunity to share their experiences and provide feedback through completing a short survey. Participation is voluntary and all responses will be anonymised.
