In an essay, Haruki Murakami points out a key problem of our contemporary world: ‘We are living in a fake world; we are watching fake evening news. [...] But we find reality in this fake world. So our stories are the same; we are walking through fake scenes, but ourselves, as we walk through these scenes, are real.’ Join the UN/REAL team to redefine our understanding of everyday reality in a time when new digital developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies are rapidly evolving. The audience is invited to do an interactive experiment. The panel will talk about the benefits of imaginative storytelling that present our physical reality and imagined experiences not as separate realms but as extensions of one another. The event will take Murakami’s work as an example of how we need to cultivate a new attitude that is open to the ambiguities rushing towards us.This event takes place in Japan between 4-5pm Japan Standard time (JST). This event is part of the Being Human festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 10–19 November 2022. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
